This is a good one to use bells with or just rock back and forth to the rhythm.

I'm a Little Cuckoo Clock
Tick-tock, tick tock,
I'm a little cuckoo clock.

Cuckoo!

- at each cuckoo you lift your child up. Older children stand for each one.
Continue to a count of 5.



Grand Old Duke of York

The grand old duke of York,
  Salute
He had ten thousand men,
 waggle all your fingers
He marched them up to the top of the hill
 march and stand up as you go (or... have sitting parents lift baby up in the air)
And he marched them down again
  march and sit as you go (or ... have sitting parents lower baby down)


And when you're up, you're up
 march and stand up as you go (or... have sitting parents lift baby up in the air)
And when you're down, you're down
  march and sit as you go (or ... have sitting parents lower baby down
And when you're only only half way up
  half way ...
You're neither up nor down
  Up, then down -- quickly

This works well as a round or with rhythm sticks
  ---if you are telling to the older children.
p.s. I would NOT combine a round with the rhythm sticks
- that would be asking just a bit much of adults, let alone little kids! ;)

We've been together for many a day,
So let your tail go swish,
And your wheels go 'round.
Giddy'up we're homeward bound.

I like to take the horse and the buggy
As we go traveling through the town

I like to hear old Dobbin's Clip Clop
As I watch the wheels go 'round.


Well now, it ain't a true trip to the English countryside without a fox hunt. WAIT just a minute . . . did you all bring your horses today? Oh you did, how fortunate, get on your horses lads and ladies--
 

This is the Way the Farmer Rides

This is the way the farmer rides, the farmer rides, the farmer rides
-bounce baby on your knee
This is the way the farmer rides
So early in the morning.

This is the way the gentleman rides...
-bounce baby in an English trot
This is the way the Lady rides...
-soft side saddle trot

And Old Dobbin, well he just goes gallopy trot, gallopy trot

insert slow and goofy voice here ;)

Thankful are We


A Gobbeldy Gobble Gathering of Fabulous Thanksgiving Tales & Songs that are Just Right for a Storytime


The Holidays are here! It's a time to get together with the whole family! Let's get a move on it, time to go.

Hand out jingle bells for this little song. Let the kids keep the beat and really make it sound like a sleigh ride. Gather up the bells after the song is done, otherwise you will NOT get a moment's quite :)

I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie by Alison Jackson
I have the Little Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly stuffed doll that I got from Mimi's Motifs. I quickly adapted it over for this Thanksgiving storytelling by creating some felt 'foods' to go along with Alison Jackson's great adaptation.

p.s. if you ever happen to be in the Orem Public Library, come to the children's desk, ask for me and you can see all my 'toys' irl! Warning, you might get more than you expected ;) I can get a bit enthusiastic when I talk about story and laptime!

When I bring her out from 'knocking on the door' she is carrying the pie, which, before you know it, she has swallowed whole!!


Well, there's no food left here, not even a pot to cook it in. Shall we go next door to the Tappletons and see if they have any food to share?

This is a great story to just tell, put some effort into memorizing this story and tell it with expression! I guarantee that if you do, the pictures the kids create in thier own heads will stay with them a lot longer. Oh, little p.s. Yes, I put the books on display for kids to check out too.

Well, I guess there's nothing left for it, we'll just have to head back home.

I like to have the kids use the sticks again for 'Horsey, Horsey' but if you've got lots of younger or very active children you might want to just forget that and pick up the sticks now.

Well, like the Tappletons' discovered, it's not the turkey or the trimmings that make Thanksgiving, it's the people you spend the day with that truly make Thanksgiving a day of thanks.

Rhythm Sticks


Making Rhythm Sticks

I've cut 3/4" dowels into 12" lengths (8" is a nice size too) for rhythm sticks.

Sand the tops and bottoms, store'em in a drawstring bag and you're good to go!

Introducing Rhythm Sticks to a Storytime

After handing out 2 sticks to each child
~they will immediately start clicking them together, no prompting is necessary
do this little rhythym stick game...

All right kids, you all sound great!
Everyone, let's see how good your listening ears are.
Can you all put your sticks on your shoulders until I tell you?

Now let's see if you can make your sticks sound fast and loud!
~ clickclickclickclickclickclick Great job.

Now, can you make them sound soft and quiet?
~ taptaptaptaptaptaptaptap

Oh, very good, I can tell you all have your listening ears on today

Now, put your hands together, sticks together too and move them in a big circle.
~vroomvroomvroomvroom

Excellent circle-making everyone! Sticks to shoulders again.

Are you ready? Let's do it again, can you keep up with me?
Listen closely, and go!


You can do this several times, try to trick them, play with it, let them really have some fun with the sticks, when it looks like everyone is under control, move into your story or song. At the end, have the kids put the sticks together, hold them up over thier heads and you can easily gather them up.

- this is another song we learned in Let's Play Music - I highly recommend these preschool music classes. It's unbeatable for teaching pitch, rhythm, beginning music and it's FUN!

~For Storytime and older have groups of kids (and the parents) create a rain and thunderstorm!

Start with snapping fingers
~this group snaps the entire time
Now add clapping
Then add slapping legs
Now add stomping feet
Finally add rythm sticks!

~the accumulated sound is really neat!

Okay, time to take it back down

Stop the rhythm sticks
Stop the stomping
Stop the slapping
Stop the clapping
Stop the snapping

~and the storm is gone :)

Farm Day Fun


Yahoo!!!
Gather up your muckin' boots and roll up those overalls! It's time to giddy-up my Kiddie-roos, we're gonna have a gallopin' great day at the farm today!


There are so many horse, pig, cow, duck, chicken, cat, dog and mouse fingerplays and songs! I really suggest having a 'pick from the bucket' activity where you have toy animals that the kids reach in the bucket (or apron) to pick from - then do the fingerplay that matches


Down on Grandpa's Farm

We're on our way, We're on our way, on our way to Grandpa's Farm

Betty Botter Bought Some Better Butter
(this tongue twister is probably better in a storytime instead of a laptime)

Betty Botter bought some butter,
But she said, this butter's bitter.
If I put it in my batter
It will make my batter bitter

But a bit of better butter
Will make my batter better.
So she bought some better butter
Better than the bitter butter

And she put it in her batter
Now her batter was not bitter
So 'twas better Betty Botter
Bought a bit of better butter.

Piggie Wig and Piggie Wee
-hold up two thumbs

Hungry pigs as pigs could be,
For their dinner had to wait
Down behind the barnyard gate
-make a gate with your hands/fingers

Piggie Wig and Piggie Wee
-wiggle thumbs again

Climbed the barnyard gate to see
-poke thumbs through fingers

Peeping thorugh the gate so high,
But no dinner could they spy
-wiggle thumbs

Piggie Wig an Piggie Wee got down
-back thumbs out of 'gate'

Sad as pigs could be
But the gate soon opened wide
-hands swing apart

Now they scampered forth outside
-thumbs run out

Greedy as pigs could be
For their dinner ran pell mell
And into the trough both piggies fell
-make a trough with hands, thumbs fall in
